Wegovy® pill: the first FDA-approved oral GLP-1

Wegovy® pill is an FDA-approved prescription medicine used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for adults with obesity, or overweight adults with at least one weight-related medical problem. This is the first and only oral GLP-1 medication approved to support weight loss and long-term weight management.

At Options Medical Weight Loss, we combine medication oversight with structured coaching, nutrition guidance, and continued support, so you’re not navigating side effects, dose changes, or plateaus alone.

Is Our Telehealth Medical Weight Loss Program Right for You?

What is Wegovy® pill?

Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy® pill is an oral form of semaglutide created for chronic weight management. It’s taken once daily (not weekly like the injection).

It is also approved to help reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), such as heart attack or stroke, in obese or overweight adults who have established cardiovascular disease.

How oral GLP-1 medication supports weight loss

GLP-1 medications work by targeting appetite and metabolic pathways involved in hunger and fullness. In practical terms, many patients experience:

  • Feeling satisfied with smaller portions
  • Fewer cravings and less “food noise”
  • Easier adherence to a reduced-calorie plan over time

Our team at Options Medical Weight Loss focuses on the whole system: medication + nutrition + behavior + monitoring, so results are more sustainable.

Results seen in clinical research

In the OASIS 4 phase 3 study (64 weeks, adults with overweight/obesity without diabetes), people taking oral semaglutide 25 mg daily achieved significantly greater weight loss than placebo.

  • Average weight loss was about 14% (treatment-policy analysis)
  • In an “on-treatment” analysis, average weight loss was about 17%
  • A large share achieved at least 5% body weight loss

Note: Results vary based on adherence, dose progression, lifestyle factors, and individual biology.

Wegovy® pill dosing: a safe, physician-guided approach

Wegovy® tablets are available in multiple strengths, from 1.5mg (starter dose), up to 25mg, and dosing is typically increased over time.

Your Options provider will determine whether Wegovy® pill is appropriate and guide a safe titration plan based on your health history, response, and tolerability.

Who may be a fit for Wegovy® pill?

Ongoing monitoring for safety and results

Wegovy® has known risks and warnings. We help you monitor symptoms, hydration, labs when appropriate, and progress, so you stay safe while moving toward real change.

Common side effects and safety considerations

Like other semaglutide-based treatments, Wegovy® pill can cause side effects, most commonly digestive symptoms as your body adjusts. In clinical studies, the effects reported were similar to those seen with semaglutide injections, including nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting.

Wegovy® also includes important safety warnings and isn’t the right fit for everyone, including people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or those with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).

That’s why Options starts with a medical evaluation and provides ongoing oversight, so you can understand the risks, know what to watch for, and feel supported throughout treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Wegovy® tablets (oral semaglutide) are FDA-approved for chronic weight management in eligible adults when used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. The Wegovy® pill is also approved to reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events, such as heart attack or stroke, in adults with overweight or obesity who have established cardiovascular disease.

As the first FDA-approved oral GLP-1 medication for weight loss, Wegovy® pill represents a significant advancement in medical weight management.

Both the pill and injection contain the same active ingredient (semaglutide) but they are different formulations with different dosing schedules and administration methods.

The semaglutide pill is taken once daily, while the injection is administered once weekly. Some patients prefer the convenience of a daily oral medication, while others may prefer weekly injections. At Options Medical Weight Loss, your provider will help determine which fits your lifestyle, medical history, and weight loss goals.

In the OASIS 4 clinical trial, adults taking Wegovy® pill along with diet and physical activity changes lost an average of about 14% of their body weight when all participants were included in the analysis. In patients who remained on treatment throughout the study, average weight loss was approximately 17%.

Individual results vary based on factors such as adherence, dose progression, metabolism, and lifestyle habits. Your care team at Options focuses on supporting long-term success, not just short-term weight changes.

Wegovy® pill is an oral GLP-1 receptor agonist that works by mimicking a naturally occurring hormone involved in appetite regulation and metabolism. It helps reduce hunger, increase feelings of fullness, and slow stomach emptying.

For many patients, this leads to reduced calorie intake, fewer cravings, and improved ability to follow a structured nutrition plan. When combined with physician guidance and lifestyle support, the Wegovy® pill can be a powerful tool for sustainable weight loss.

The most common side effects reported are gastrointestinal, particularly during the early stages of treatment or when the dose is increased. These may include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal discomfort, and bloating. These side effects are often temporary and can be minimized with proper dose progression, nutrition guidance, and physician oversight.

Wegovy® also carries important warnings outlined in the FDA prescribing information, including risks related to thyroid tumors, pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, dehydration-related kidney problems, and low blood sugar in certain patients. Your Options provider will review these risks with you and monitor your response closely throughout treatment.

When prescribed appropriately and monitored by a licensed medical provider, Wegovy® pill is considered safe and effective for many eligible adults. Safety depends on proper patient selection, dose titration, and ongoing medical supervision.

At Options Medical Weight Loss, every Wegovy® pill program begins with a comprehensive medical evaluation and includes regular follow-ups to manage side effects, assess progress, and adjust treatment as needed.

Wegovy® pill is approved for adults with obesity, or overweight adults with at least one weight-related medical condition, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or cardiovascular disease.

It may not be appropriate for individuals with certain medical conditions, including a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). A consultation with a medical provider is the best way to determine whether the Wegovy® pill is right for you.

No. Wegovy® pill should not be used with other semaglutide-containing products or with other GLP-1 receptor agonist medications. Taking multiple GLP-1 therapies together can increase the risk of side effects without added benefit.

Your provider will carefully review all prescription and over-the-counter medications you’re taking to ensure your treatment plan is safe and appropriate.

Obesity is considered a chronic, long-term condition, and Wegovy® pill is designed for ongoing use as part of a comprehensive weight management plan. Some patients may remain on treatment long term, while others may transition to maintenance strategies under medical guidance.

At Options Medical Weight Loss, we focus on helping you build sustainable habits alongside medication, so you’re supported whether you continue treatment or adjust your plan over time.

Options Medical Weight Loss provides physician-supervised weight loss medication, combined with personalized nutrition guidance, coaching, and ongoing monitoring. We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions.

Our team takes the time to evaluate your health, explain your options, manage side effects, and support long-term success, so the Wegovy® pill becomes part of a structured, medically guided plan rather than a standalone prescription.
