Semaglutide, a GLP-1 medication, is taking the weight loss world by storm. Several GLP-1 medications are now on the market including semaglutide, Wegovy®, Ozempic®, Rybelsus®, Saxenda®, Victoza®, Trulicity®, Zepbound™and Mounjaro® (Tirzepatide).

If you’re taking or considering taking semaglutide, take care to avoid these five common mistakes.

How Does Semaglutide Work?

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 medication. GLP-1 medications (glucagon-like peptide 1s) are one of the most effective drug classes on the market for long-term weight loss. GLP-1 medications simulate the natural hormone produced in the intestines that helps people feel full after they eat. It also stimulates insulin secretion. Doing so allows cells to take up glucose and inhibits glucagon secretion, which prevents more glucose from releasing into the bloodstream. (Source: obesitymedicine.com) All this lowers blood sugar levels. GLP-1s also increase satiety (how full you feel) after eating, which helps contribute to its weight loss properties (FDA.gov). There’s also evidence that they contribute to weight loss by lowering the body’s natural “set point” for weight.

Mistake Number 1:

Skipping the Consultation or Not Disclosing Your Full Medical History

It’s crucial to discuss your medical history with a medical provider before starting any medications, including semaglutide. Part of your consultation is ensuring the medication is appropriate for you. Your medical provider will rule out potential contraindications and address any concerns you may. To receive a prescription for semaglutide, Ozempic® or Wegovy® you must medically qualify.

Mistake Number 2:

Ignoring the Dosage Instructions

Do not ignore or deviate from the prescribed dosing instructions. What happens if you take more than your prescribed dose? You end up nauseated with acid reflux. Your bowels may start gurgling and acting up. Your appetite decreases so significantly that you feel fatigued. You still have to ingest enough food to fuel your body. Without proper nutrition you will have low energy and slow your metabolism. A slower metabolism and lack of energy is the opposite of what you want if sustained weight loss if your goal.

Mistake Number 3:

Neglecting Healthy Lifestyle Habits

Remember the semaglutide, a GLP-1 medication, works best when combined with a balanced diet and regular physical movement. Relying on the medication alone to lose weight is not going to yield optimal results. Eating greasy or sugary foods as your main source of sustenance can actually make negative side effects worse and imped your progress! It also makes sustaining your weight loss long-term much more difficult.

Mistake Number 4:

Overlooking Side Effects

Be aware of common side effects such as nausea or gastrointestinal discomfort. Communicate any concerns to your medical provider promptly. Your medical provider can give you tips on supportive care nutrition or call in a prescription to help with side effects. Note, side effects should be temporary. If you’re experiencing constant side effects that don’t subside after treatment, reach out to your medical provider for additional help.

Mistake Number 5:
